Jeffrey S. Plagenhoef, M.D.
Anesthesiologist
Dr. Jeff Plagenhoef has been providing anesthesia in Dothan since
1991. Originally from Kalamazoo, Michigan, and a graduate with High
Honors from Michigan State University, he has lived in the South
since 1983. He received his Doctorate of Medicine from the Medical
College of Georgia, and completed his anesthesiology residency
focusing on cardiac anesthesia at the University of Alabama at
Birmingham. After being elected Chief Resident his final year at UAB,
he moved to Dothan in 1991 to join Anesthesia Consultants Medical
Group, P.C., and currently serves as Staff Anesthesiologist at
Southeast Alabama Medical Center (SAMC), Dothan Surgicenter, and
American Surgery Center.
A Diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiology, Plagenhoef is
also a member of the American Medical Association (AMA), Medical
Association of the State of Alabama (MASA), American Society of
Anesthesiologists (ASA), Alabama State Society of Anesthesiologist (ASSA),
American Society of Regional Anesthesia, and the Houston County
Medical Society (HCMS). He is licensed by the National and Alabama
Boards of Medical Examiners.
Dr. Plagenhoef is an active participant in physician leadership. On
a national level, he serves on several ASA committees and task
forces, as well as being a member its governing body since 1996 and
Alternate Director of the Alabama Component Society since 2003. In
Alabama, he has served as President of the Alabama State Society of
Anesthesiologists, and he has been a member of its Executive
Committee and Board of Directors since 1997. Plagenhoef has been a
member of the MASA College of Counselors and House of Delegates
since 2001. Locally he has served in every officer position of the
HCMS, including President.
Recently elected Vice President of the medical staff at SAMC, Dr.
Plagenhoef will serve as President of the staff 2006-07. He has been
or is serving as a member of the hospital's Medical Executive,
Credentials, Ethics, and Quality and Risk Management Committees, and
is Chief of Anesthesiology. With a keen interest in quality
improvement, patient safety and cost reduction, he is Chairman of
the Quality Council at SAMC and is the physician leader in selecting
implementing a perioperative electronic information system. He also
served on MASA's Committee on Office-based Surgery and Anesthesia,
which wrote the current state safety regulations and guidelines.
Dr. Plagenhoef’s wife Michelle, an Internal Medicine doctor, was
born in Dothan and raised in Enterprise, Alabama. They are blessed
with three active children, Nick, Madelin, and Alex. He is very
interested in physical fitness and health, and his hobbies include
coaching children's sports, skiing, triathlons and marathons, and
cooking. Dr. Plagenhoef and his family are members of Calvary
Baptist Church.
